Barton Bulletin and Barton Historical Society Newsletter

History

The Barton Bulletin was published from 1959 through 1989 with just three editors: 1959 - A two-page Christmas letter from William P. Barton, 1960 - 1976 Eleanor (Keese) Barton (wife of William P. Barton), 1977 - 1989 Thelma (Barton) Stephens Gilbreath. Those thirty-one years saw growth from a simple 2-page letter, to a 7-page mimeographed Bulletin printed on legal-size paper and published twice a year, to a lengthier 67-pages printed on letter-size paper, booklet-folded and stapled, and printed two or three times a year, to a much longer 90 to 142 pages, booklet-folded and stapled, and printed once a year using commercial offset printing presses.

Both Cousin Eleanor and Cousin Thelma employed a folksy, chatty style addressed to "cousins" with news about current happenings in readers' lives, family history, legends, genealogical data and speculations. Many readers were reported to have written to each editor indicating how much they enjoyed receiving the Bulletin.

Apparently for lack of a replacement editor The Barton Bulletin ceased publication after the 1989 Edition. It resumed in December 2000 appearing as a 4-page 11x8-1/2 photocopied newsletter renamed Barton Historical Society Newsletter as part of an effort to revitalize Barton Historical Society and was expanded in 2007 to a 12-20 page quarterly edition.
