General Notes: RECORDS FOR DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM HEATON AND MARY (BARTON) HEATON WERE SUBMITTED BY RICHARD SNYDER OF OLATHE, KANSAS

William Heaton was born in 1764, twelve years before the Declaration
of Independence. It has been said that William Heaton lived with or was
employed by James Barton when a young man at the time his daughter Mary
was an infant or small child, and kissed her and laughingly remarked she
would be his wife sometime, which strange to relate came true many years
later after he had married his first wife, who died.

It is also said that at the time of his first marriage, little Mary
Barton and her mother were present at the wedding and on this occasion
the child Mary burned her hand on a hot iron leaving a scar for life.
The name of William Heaton's first wife is not known at this time,
although five children, boys and girls, were reportedly born from this
union, some of whom visited their father in his old age in Meigs County,
Ohio.

William and Mary Barton Heaton were married in Harford County,
Maryland in about 1810. Undoubtedly influenced by their relatives, they
left their home in Maryland around 1827 and settled on a farm purchased
from William Llewllyn in Chester township on the Bedford Township
borderline, near William Cook's land on Kingsbury Creek. William Heaton
and his kinsmen were all Methodists. Regular preaching and class meeting
services began to be held about the year 1825 at the homes of Thomas S.
Barton of Scipio Township and John Barton and William Cook of Bedford.
Later schoolhouses were utilized for the purpose. In 1856 a large church
building named Boring Chapel was erected in Hoyt-Town.

James and Mary Cozad Heaton purchased a 212 acre farm in the
southeast part of Bedford Township on Kingsbury Creek, and settled there,
first in the usual type of log cabin that was built in those days, and
later in a nice frame house built nearby. Their farm was within one-half
mile of the present village of Hoyt-Town and near the farm of John
Barton, Mary's father. The couple had seven children, Celenda Heaton,
Charles Marion Heaton, Mary Elizabeth Heaton, Andrew Donnally Heaton,
James Albert Heaton, Florence Heaton, and Jennie Heaton. All of the

very fine farm of hill and bottom land containing a great variety of
excellent timber. The Heatons were Methodists and helped erect a large
church building at Hoyt-Town that was completed in 1856 and named Boring
Chapel in honor of their Elder.

The famous Confederate General John Hunt Morgan also known as
"Morgan the Raider" raided Meigs County, Ohio during the month of July,
1863. According to a Heaton family tradition, Morgan and his troops
spent one night on the Heaton farm during that raid.

Mary Cozad Heaton died of fever on 9 March 1865. James Heaton left
Ohio in December, 1884 to visit his son Charles Marion Heaton and other
relatives and acquaintances in the State of Kansas. At Council Grove,
Kansas he was stricken with apoplexy on 1 January 1885 and died. His
remains were accompanied back to his old home by his son, Charles Marion
Heaton and laid to rest beside his wife Mary Cozad Heaton in Mount Hermon
Cemetery.

On James and Mary's tombstone we find:

"Again we have to meet thee
when the day of life is fled
Then in heaven with joy to greet thee
where no farewell tear is shed"

General Notes: James Horn Sr. appears to have been named for his uncle, James
Barton Horn. He and his brother, Joshua, married sisters Ann and
Susanna Couch in Orange County, North Carolina probably in 1804.
James served in the War of 1812. On October 15, 1814 he and his
father sold 118=BD acres they jointly held in Orange County for $350.
They were in Tennessee by 1820, possibly earlier, appearing in
the Giles County census that year. James and Ann Horn left Giles
County, TN in 1837 and moved to what is now Christian County,
Missouri, taking with them their children Rachel, William R. and
Caleb. Their oldest son, Thomas, was already in Greene County,
Missouri by 1832. Son James stayed in Tennessee, either in Giles or
Shelby County. His brother, Joshua and Susanna Couch Horn remained in
Shelby County, Tennessee.
The Greene County tax list of 1834 shows James Horn owned one
horse worth $40, on which he paid a tax of 37.5 cents. The following
year he had added five head of cattle, and he paid a tax on $115 in
property. The tax list of 1843 shows that most of his wealth was in
the four slaves he owned, valued at $1600. He also possessed one horse
and seven head of cattle, worth $86. He appears in the 1850 census of
Greene County, living alone in Finley Township. His grandchildren,
Elizabeth and James K. Horn, were living two doors away in the
household of Joseph Miller.

General Notes: Thomas arrived in Missouri in 1832 and settled on a branch of
Wilson Creek in Campbell Township, Greene County, not far from the
site of the famous Civil War battle fought thirty years later. The
western part of Greene County had been explored in its early days by
Nathan Boone, youngest son of Daniel Boone and one of the first white
men to traverse Southwest Missouri. He eventually settled on land in
what is now the town of Ash Grove, in the heart of a large grove of
timber composed principally of walnut and ash. Nathan at one time
owned several hundred acres of land there, and several of the Boone
family subsequently lived in the county.
The 1833 Greene County Tax Assessor's List shows that Thomas
owned one horse, valued at $40 and "one cattle" worth $10. On August
12, 1833 he was indicted for gaming, along with several prominent
residents of Greene County. However, in December 1834, he was
appointed deputy sheriff. In early 1836, he was appointed captain of
the patrol in Campbell Township. In June of that year, he was elected
county collector. Then in June, 1839 he was elected Sheriff for
Greene County. He was re-elected to that office in 1839 and again in
1840. He is said to have owned a tannery in Springfield at one time.
In 1838, a United States Land Office was opened at Springfied and land
in Southwest Missouri was offered for homesteading. Though Thomas had
occupied and apparently cultivated land prior to this, it was not then
possible to acquire title to the land. In 1840, he entered a tract
north of Finley near Ozark, where he subsequently lived. The Greene
County tax list for 1843 showed that Thomas owned four horses and
sixteen head of cattle, valued at $200; one timepiece, worth $20;
money at interest totaling $70. Thomas died September 22, 1843 and
his estate went to an administrator on November 6, 1843. In March,
1848 Elizabeth married Joseph Miller. On September 18 of that year, a
