98. Thomas (Jr.) Barton

CHRISTENING: Thomas Barton, male, Christened 13 Jun 1802; Recorded in Garstang, Lancashire, England. Parents Thomas Barton and Jenny. Source: Church of England, Vital Records Index: British Isles, CD-ROM (in possession of Dean Barton), FHL Number 1502427; Dates 1735-1825., Family History Library, 35 North West Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84150.

OCCUPATION: Thomas Barton, a block printer.

FATHER-SON-RELATIONSHIP: The marriage certificate showing the son Thomas Barton (Jr) and Charolette Grimshaw (second wife), indicates that he (Jr) and Thomas Barton (Sr) are father-son. Thomas Barton, widower, block printer, Manchester; his father is Thomas Barton a blacksmith. Everything matches as we would expect.

SECOND MARRIAGE RESEARCH: The first wife, Elizabeth Kilshaw Barton, died in Manchester, 23 Feb 1843. The WKB journal indicates his father Thomas married about 1.5 years later and they had three children. WKB did not give the name of the new wife or the children. We know that Thomas was living in Manchester, would be a batchler, is a printer by profession, and his father was Thomas Barton, a blacksmith; Thomsas (Jr) and his second wife had three children between 1843 and 1848 (Thomas died in 1848). Charlotte Grimshaw fits, rather than Martha Rivington.

RESEARCH-NOTE: A. B. Barton, Monticello UT did reseach and in pencil wrote the name of wife number two as Charlotte Grimshaw, married 5 Nov 1843. He seems to be the first to find Charlotte.

Birth-Marriage: According to William Kilshaw Barton's journal, Stephan Cornall (Cornah) Barton (1) must have been born in Carlisle, Cumberland County about September 1830 (family lived in Carlisle for about four years), (2) WKB finds Stephan in August 1873 in Preston married to Swards (Swain) (an Irish woman), and (3) Kristine Frost's writings indicate Stephen and his brother Robert were not christened until after the family moved to Manchester. UPDATE: 1 May 2001.

NAME-CONFLICT: According to researcher Geoff Fitzgerald, 28 James Street, Ashburton, New Zealand; this person is Thomas Cornal Barton, based on these facts: (1) the William Kilshaw Barton journal (handwriting) was very difficult to decifer, (2) he was called Cornel Barton on baptismal records, and (3) the 1881 British census shows information that is in sinc with Thomas Barton. (A) Head: Thomas (the family name), married, age 48, male, born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, occupation engineer (driver). Wife: Mary Barton (maiden name could have been Mary Swards or Sivards, and Irish name as mentioned in the journal), married, age 49, female, born in Ireland. Sister in-law to Thomas Barton (head), Margaret Sivards, unmarried, age 50, female, born in Ireland, Occupation was formerly machine tenter. Because of the above information, this person is known as Thomas Cornel (Cornah) Barton rather than Stephen Cornall Barton.

Mary Swards (Swain)(Sivards)

AKA: Name was Swards or Swain.

NAME: Kristine E. Frost, A HISTORY OF THE FAMILIES OF THOMAS BARTON AND WILLIAM KILSHAW BARTON, 41 pages; 1828-1887; Cedar City UT; FHL Book 929.273, B285fk, FHL Film #1697448 with photocopy in poss Dean Barton, Draper, Utah. His parents are Thomas Barton, blacksmith. Her father is George Grimshaw, skinner. Witnesses were William Baines and Harriett Grimshaw.

NEEDED: What we know is that Thomas Barton's first wife, Elizabeth, died 23 Feb 1843. We have found that Thomas Barton married Charlotte Grimshaw approximately nine months after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth in Nov 1843. Thomas and Charolette had three children between 1844 and 1849 (Thomas died in 1848). We are searching the for a widow Charlotte Barton with three small children. Martha Rivington is in the Ancestral File, but does not fit the criteria.

Barton, Age 3, Female, Birth at Blackpool, Lancashire, England; Mary Barton, Widow, Age 67, Chorley, Lancashire, England. COMMENTS: We are looking for the children of Thomas Barton and Charlotte Grimshaw who were born between 1844 and 1848. The name Grimshaw and the time frame fits well. CONFLICT: Could Charlotte and Mary be the same person -- See Christening record. UPDATE: 9 Mar 2001.

(Ideas from Geoff Fitzgerald, New Zeland):
Look for birth certificates to identify parents (births were between Aug 1844 - Feb 1849 on the following males):
Barton, Grimshaw and his family (Grimshaw Barton, born 1846, Blackpool, Lancashire, England).
Barton, William G, born 1843 in Manchester. Does G stand for Grimshaw?
Barton, Charles. Born 1844 in Manchester.
Barton, Thomas. Born 1845 Manchester. Note the son is John G. K. Barton. Could this stand for John Grimshaw Kilshaw Barton?
