Notes

1. Geoffrey BARTON

Lancashire Deeds, Part B: Barton Deeds: Barton, Goosnargh, and Whittingham; FHL English book 942.7B4c N.S. v 91, pp 25-93. Documents found by researcher Joyce Parsons in November 2002. Dean Barton read the wills and put the lineage together under the supervision of Joyce.

The Barton family somehow obtained two carucates of land in Barton. At the Grand Inquest taken in 1212 it was found that Walter, son of Osbert held ten carucates of land in thanage, of which the heirs of Geoffrey of Barton held two carucates. This form of tenure may indicate that the ancestors of Walter and Geoffrey were settled here in pre-conquest days, when Earl Tostig held Amounderness. Pages 25 and 34.

Geoffrey of Barton held Barton in service under Walter son of Osbert. He had a grant c. 1200 of Kidsnape in Goosnargh from Robert son of Bernard.

John W.P. Parker, author and editor of our source (published 1934) states on page 25: "The series of muniments that came to the Shuttleworths with Barton estates not only give us a connected history of the Barton family, but throw considerable light upon local topography and manorial customs."

Researcher Joyce M. Parson, A. G., Salt Lake City, Utah, sponsored by Dean Barton, Draper, Utah. Update: 14 Nov 2002.
