Barton Historical Society Newsletter

Special Edition – 2004 Spring Newsletter

Message from our President

Greetings from Georgia!  We’re very much looking forward to the 2004 Barton Historical Society reunion!  This year, for the first time, we’ll split our attendance between two local family reunions.  On Saturday, June 26, we’ll be back in Pine Log, Georgia, where we enjoyed the 2003 Reunion, and on Sunday, June 27, we’ll be at another nearby site - Everett Springs, Georgia.  Both Barton families are excited about hosting this year’s reunion.  It should be a real treat!  This will be my fifth consecutive reunion and I’ve enjoyed every one that I’ve attended.  I’ve met many special folks at the reunions and look forward to meeting you this year!

Elsewhere in the newsletter is info on the agenda and directions and details for making motel reservations.  We’ll have a variety of Genealogy presentations on Saturday, plus many chances to meet and visit (actually beginning Friday night at the motel).  On Sunday, we’ll have our traditional worship service, this year in the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Everett Springs, where a Barton descendant, Howard Touchstone, will present the message.  On both days, we’ll join in a southern style “covered dish” lunch, which I predict will be even  better than you hope!  Back by “popular demand” will be my presentation on Saturday afternoon about “The Barton House”, which is both the centerpiece of the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas and my Grandmother’s home.  We’ll also get a second chance to visit the historic Barton home at “Happy Hollow”, to see other sites of local interest, and to tour several cemeteries with the Barton graves marked by American flags.

This s a special newsletter.  It announces the 2004 Annual Reunion.  It is going to our entire mailing list, nearly 500 Homes instead of to “just” the 2004 Dues-Paying  members.  We hope that you’ll take this opportunity to plan to come to the Reunion and also to join Barton Historical Society as a dues-paying member.  There is a handy form on the last page of this newsletter, that can be filled out and submitted with your dues.

The Barton Families who will host the 2004 Reunion

The 2004 Barton Reunion will be held June 26 at Pine Log, GA and June 27 at Everett Springs, GA, both near Adairsville, about 80 miles northwest of the Atlanta airport.  There are three Barton groups in Northwest Georgia: the Everett Springs Bartons, the Adairsville Bartons and the Pine Log Bartons.  All three will be a part of our host organization this year.  Some folks say that all three groups descend from Thomas Barton, Sr. and Sarah Wilson.   Others (and DNA testing) argue that each group has a different ancestry.

The Adairsville Bartons began with James Barton, son of David Barton and Elizabeth Cox, and grandson of Joseph Barton and Indiana Rebecca Anderson.  Some researchers claim that Joseph was a son of Thomas Barton and Sarah Wilson and others claim that he wasn’t.  DNA testing has been inconclusive.  It shows that he shares a common ancestry with Thomas at some point in the past, but that Joseph “probably” descends through a different Barton line.  (More testing is needed on this family)  James went to
Bartow County, GA in the early 1830s.  He received land from the Cherokee land lottery in what is now the Folsom area of Bartow County.  Folsom is near Adairsville and some of James's descendants moved there, becoming known as the Adairsville Bartons. James began building a house and stayed some in Pine Log with Rev. Stephen Ellis and his family.  It was at this time he met and married Sarah Ellis, daughter of Rev. Ellis.  James brought his parents, David and Elizabeth Cox Barton to Bartow County, probably after the house was built.  David and Elizabeth died one day apart and are buried in a common grave in Hayes Cemetery.  The house James built in the late 1830s still stands today and is owned by Cannon Barton, James's great great grandson.  It was formerly owned by Cannon's father, R.D. Barton, Jr. who owned the Barton Funeral Home in Adairsville, and is still owned and run by the Barton family.  For many years this line of Bartons had their annual family reunion at "Happy Hollow", the old home place.  (Open for visits on Saturday afternoon)

The Everett Springs Bartons started with William Barton, born 1788.   William has long been believed to be the son of David Barton and Nancy Barrett in Tigerville, SC and grandson of Thomas Barton and Sarah Wilson.  However, DNA testing has shown him to carry a different DNA than David’s other descendants.  Research is still being done on William.  It is believed that he was living in Georgia with his son Allen Barton at the time of his death, having gone there after the death of his wife Elizabeth.  In the Tygerville Baptist Church cemetery, there is a monument "in memory" of William, indicating that he is not actually buried there.  The original William Barton homestead still stands today. Research is still being done on William.   At this time, the family lists their lineage as follows (from our Family History page – Lineage XIII):

William, b 1 Sep 1836, Greenville SC, m Mary Jane Terry -  Mary C. Barton

About the same time that James Barton came to Georgia, a man who may have been his second cousin, Joshua Lane Barton moved with his family to Bartow County, GA and settled near Pine Log which is about 7 miles from Folsom.  Joshua Lane was the son of Benjamin Franklin Barton and Dorcus Anderson, born July 5, 1784 in South Carolina and grandson of Thomas Barton and Sarah Wilson.  Joshua Lane was married to a Miss Stephens, daughter of Daniel Stephens. Vinson Anderson Barton was the oldest son of Joshua Lane, born March 2, 1814.  He was married in 1836 to Susan Ellis, daughter of Rev. Stephen Ellis.  Susan was the half-sister of Sarah Ellis, who married James Barton.  Many descendants of Joshua Lane Barton are buried at Pine Log. James Monroe Barton was the son of Vinson Anderson Barton and Susan Ellis, was married to Collista Ann Collins.  This Family is also included in Lineage I of the Family History page:

Many Pine Log Bartons descend from James Monroe. Stephen Ellis, father of both Susan Ellis Barton and Sarah Ellis Barton, was born March 25, 1787 in NC.  Stephen was a Methodist minister and established the Pine Log Methodist Church in 1834.  This is where the 2003 reunion will be held.  The church is on the National Register of Historic Places and has an interesting history.
This gives you some history and insight into the Pine Log and other Northwest Georgia Bartons and how they fit in with other Bartons.  Pine Log Bartons are making plans and looking forward to seeing many other Bartons in June.

Shirley Keith, with additional information by Terry Barton

Post Script: Terry will give provide a brief discussion about the DNA testing on these three families at the Saturday morning meeting.

Update on the Project 42 DNA Project

Currently, Barton DNA Project is stumped on several of our Lineages in how to tie the known related, but unattached families together and in how to tie the unattached families into the ones with older pedigrees. Relative Genetics has held their testing to the 26 markers of our test, but a competitor, Family Tree DNA, has moved forward to "37" markers. There is quite a "buzz" among Surname Project Coordinators in trying out and attempting to understand the additional markers. The hope is that they will allow a finer discernment of relationships.  We have launched a special project with Family Tree DNA.  They will use our RG results for their Panel 1 and will test us on 2 more panels totaling 25 markers. There are some duplicates between our prior RG 26 marker testing and the 25 markers covered by these tests. When the two tests are merged, we will have results on a total of 42 markers, up from our current 26.

Barton Historical Society’s DNA Sponsorship Committee has authorized a Phase 1 limited test that we call “Project 42” and is paying a portion of the cost for 15 participants.   Another 7 participants are covering their full cost.  Test kits began arriving on March 26.  We hope to have the results available for presentation at the 2004 Reunion.  Details about the project participants are at http://www.bartondna.info/Project42.htm
