"The BHS 2003 Pine Log Reunion was a big success and enjoyed by all.
Eighty-nine people registered, representing 10 states -
California,
Florida, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

A big thank you goes to the
Pine Log United Methodist Church for the use
of their building.  Also, to the Pine Log Bartons, especially Paul and
Sandy Nally for the work they did getting ready for the reunion.  We're
looking forward to going back to Pine Log for next year's reunion.

Also, thanks to Benson, Cannon and Louis Barton for opening "Happy
Hollow", the house their great, great grandfather, James Barton, built
in the early 1830s in Folsom."

Message from our President

I am pleased to report that Barton Historical Society continues to improve and thrive.  Our first ever reunion "away from home" (away from Tigerville, that is) was a really good one!  (Thanks to Mark, Paul, Sandy, and many more)   I have to confess that I was a little worried about "change", but our Northwest Georgia cousins outdid themselves.  The food and welcome were both wonderful.  I hope everyone made new friends and renewed old friendships, as I did.  We had a nice variety of presentations (thanks Shirley, Mary, Michael & Rich) and saw a wonderful historic Barton home at nearby "Happy Hollow".  (Thanks - Cannon, Louis & Benson!)   Our business meeting dealt with all the issues (see the minutes on later pages) and we know where we'll meet for the next two years.  We'll be back at Pine Log Methodist Church on June 26 & 27, 2004 (thanks Mark & all) and will return "home" to Tyger Baptist Church in August 2005.

It's been a year of slow, but steady progress.  Our website: http://www.bartonsite.org/ is one of the best family websites anywhere and is surely the "gateway to the largest collection of materials related to Barton Family History on the Internet".   Our Family History page now lists over 90 Barton lines (by earliest ancestor) and well over one hundred line leaders.  We've expanded our "Store" offerings and have many interesting links to other related sites. (Thanks Rich!)   Our database now includes over 20,000 Barton names and grows weekly.  (Thanks Gary!)   We have new officers (thanks Rich, Mary & Shirley) and kept our "storekeeper" (Thanks Bette).  We have a great newsletter that keeps getting better (Thanks Kathy).  Our DNA project is now over 110 men and we eagerly await the "Final Report" on DNA1 retest, DNA2 & DNA3.  Our DNA project is one of the largest Family name DNA projects and our sponsorship program is unique.

(Unless somebody recently copied us).  Our BHS library continues to grow, with new donations arriving almost every month.

As much as we've grown and improved, I feel that we've only just begun.  If you have a special passion for something Barton or an idea for making us better, please let me know.  Hopefully, we can turn your idea and enthusiasm into another useful facet of our organization.  If you spot something that we can improve or should be doing, please let us know (be warned that I usually do look for help whenever I can. (Chuckle)

And lastly, we seem to have made a smooth transition from one to two organizations, as Tyger Bartons have re-energized and will continue their family reunions every August while Barton Historical Society continues to expand its emphasis into an organization for all Barton families.  We look forward to having Tyger as hosts for the 2005 reunion (thanks Bette and all)

Terry

Minutes of the Business Meeting of the Barton Historical Society,

June 22, 2003, Pine Log United Methodist Church, Pine Log, Georgia

Terry J. Barton, President, presided and opened the meeting of the Barton Historical Society with a welcome and readings of the hymn, “Faith of Our Fathers” and “The Storytellers.”

The Secretary’s Report.  Bette Howard Pitman presented the minutes of the last meeting, which was held at Tyger Baptist Church, Tigerville, SC.  Approved as read.

The Treasurer’s Report.  In the absence of Beth Banton, Treasurer, Bette Pitman gave the Financial Report:

 Balance as of June 15, 2003 -- $3,495.84.

 Beginning balance on June 30, 2002 -- $3,300.13.  Amount taken in -- $8,082.17.

 Amount spent -- $7,886.46.

 Expenses consisted of:

 $1,594.07 for Newsletters;

 $1,174.08 for Postal Costs and Printing other than for newsletters;

 $838.86 for Reunion Costs including church and preacher;

 $166.95 for Miscellaneous;

 $4,112.50 for DNA Project.

Announcements.  Terry announced that Peggy Barton had found a reference to a book called “Declaration” by Dorcas Anderson Barton, supposedly located in the Pickens SC Repository.  (Note –this has since been found to be a Revolutionary War pension document, not a book. It is included in The Barton Book by Nally, 1994, pages 397-8.)   Glenda Barton noted that in Texas, there is a Barton’s Chapel Cemetery, which is located in "oil country", and has its upkeep done by an oil company.

Recognitions.  Terry expressed much gratitude to Paul and Sandy Nalley for all the work done to make the Pine Log Reunion a success.  He also thanked Shirley Keith, Mary Barton, and Bettye Mathis for their wonderful efforts toward the good reunion.  He thanked Dr. Richard Barton for his contributions and work on the website.  He also gave special recognition to Annabelle Brandon for traveling the greatest distance to come to the reunion.

Terry stated that Mary Barton’s cousin who had participated in the DNA2 project had died.  Annabelle reported that Dot Barton Camp had died.  Mention was made of hereditary illnesses in the Barton family and the need to use this topic for a reunion presentation.  Rich Barton was asked to make a presentation at the next reunion on Barton hereditary illnesses.

Nominations.  Bette Pitman presented the proposed slate of officers:  Terry Barton, President; Dr. Richard Barton, Vice President; Shirley Keith, Secretary; Mary Barton, Treasurer.  Annabelle Brandon gave a word of support and made a motion to close the nominations, seconded by Glenda Barton.  The President announced the officers elected by acclamation.

Drawing for door prizes.  Recipients were:  Glenda Barton – Barton Book;  Charles Barton – Military Roll of Honor;  Annabelle Brandon – Set of Barton Bulletins (which will be given to Mary Tiffee of Oklahoma);  Carl D. Barton – Database CD;  Eloise Barton – Presentations CD;  Carroll Pitman, Bettye Mathis, Paul Nally, and Jack Barton –Barton Historical Society  Keychains.

New Business.  The location and date for the 2004 Barton Historical Society meeting was discussed.  It was noted that a vote had been taken yesterday at the Pine Log business meeting to invite the Barton Historical Society to meet at Pine Log again next year.  A vote was taken and the motion passed to schedule the BHS meeting for June 26-27, 2004, at Pine Log, Georgia.  It was announced that hopefully the Tyger Barton group will host the 2005 BHS meeting at Tyger Baptist Church, Tigerville, SC.  Terry stated that Barton Historical Society and Tyger Barton Reunion will operate separately, with treasury funds being allotted in this manner:  a little more than half to Tyger and a little less than half to BHS.  He said, “in the coming months we will be working on details,” and asked that the new officers report back on the separation at the next annual meeting.

Terry suggested that presentations be done in the sanctuary at Pine Log church next year to avoid interfering with luncheon preparation.  Possibly a tour will be held on Saturday morning and presentations given after lunch. It was suggested that tables be set up with photos, etc, to memorialize particular families.  Mary Barton suggested that folding tables be brought and set up for exhibits, and she agreed to bring some tables.

Terry noted that he had brought books representative of the BHS library –books donated by Chief of the Clan Ruth Barton Coleman and by Don Hyde of Colorado.  He stated that Robert Barton of Carmel Valley, CA, has offered his Barton materials to BHS.

It was suggested that a collection be made and a bucket was passed around.  Donations totaling $261.75 were collected.
