Barton Historical Society Newsletter
SPRING 2003
![]()
Message from our President
Greetings from Georgia! We’re looking very forward to the Barton Historical Society reunion in Pine Log, Georgia on June 21 & 22, 2003. I really hope that all y’all can come! Elsewhere in the newsletter is info on the agenda (still in draft form at press-time), directions and details for making motel reservations. This will be my fourth consecutive reunion (I’m still a newcomer) and I’ve enjoyed every one. I’ve met many special folks at the reunions and look forward to meeting you this year! We’ll have a variety of genealogy presentations on Saturday, plus many chances to meet and visit (actually beginning Friday night at the motel). On Sunday, we’ll have our traditional worship service in the Pine Log Methodist Church (hopefully, we’ll have a Barton preaching) followed by lunch and our annual business meeting. And, again, more visiting.
Our thanks to Kathy Barton Leckie for her great work in pulling together our Newsletter. Look how large and interesting it’s become under her guidance! Speaking of large: check out our website at http://www.bartonsite.org/ and see how it’s grown. As Rich says on the homepage “This is the official web site of the Barton Historical Society. It is a gateway to the largest collection of materials related to Barton Family History on the Internet.” And then, take a look at Gary’s Database at http://www.bartondatabase.info/ It continues to grow as more folks share their data with Gary.
Again, I hope that you’ll come to Pine Log. You’ll get a chance to meet Kathy, Rich, Gary and many others who help make Barton Historical Society a success if you can come.
May God Bless you and your family.
Terry
The Upcoming 2003 Reunion
The 2003 Barton Reunion will be held June 21 & 22 in Pine Log, GA which is near Cartersville, GA, about 50 miles northwest of Atlanta. The Pine Log Bartons are part of two other groups of Bartons in northwest Georgia. The three groups are known as the Everett Springs Bartons, the Adairsville Bartons and the Pine Log Bartons. It is believed that all three descend from Thomas Barton, Sr. and Sarah Wilson.
The Everett Springs Bartons started with William Barton, born 1788, son of
David Barton and Nancy Barrett in Tigerville, SC. Research
is still being done on William. It is believed that he was living in Georgia
with his son Allen Barton at the time of
his death, having gone there after the death of his wife Elizabeth. In the
Tigerville Baptist Church cemetery, there is a monument "in memory" of
William, indicating that he is not actually buried there. The original Barton
homestead still stands today.
The Adairsville Bartons began with James Barton, son of David Barton and Elizabeth Cox, and grandson of Joseph Barton and Indiana Rebecca Anderson. James went to Bartow County, GA in the early 1830s. He received land from the Cherokee land lottery in what is now the Folsom area of Bartow County. Folsom is near Adairsville and some of James's descendants moved there, becoming known as the Adairsville Bartons. James began building a house and stayed some in Pine Log with Rev. Stephen Ellis and his family. It was at this time he met and married Sarah Ellis, daughter of Rev. Ellis. James brought his parents, David and Elizabeth Cox Barton to Bartow County, probably after the house was built. David and Elizabeth died one day apart and are buried in a common grave in Hayes Cemetery. The house James built in the late 1830s still stands today and is owned by Cannon Barton, James's great great grandson. It was formerly owned by Cannon's father, R.D. Barton, Jr. who owned the Barton Funeral Home in Adairsville, and is still owned and run by the Barton family. For many years this line of Bartons had their annual family reunion at "Happy Hollow", the old home place.
About the same time that James Barton came to Georgia, his second cousin, Joshua Lane Barton moved with his family to Bartow County, GA and settled near Pine Log which is about 7 miles from Folsom. Joshua Lane was the son of Benjamin Franklin Barton and Dorcus Anderson, born July 5, 1784 in South Carolina. He was married to a Miss Stephens, daughter of Daniel Stephens. Vinson Anderson Barton was the oldest son of Joshua Lane, born March 2, 1814. He was married in 1836 to Susan Ellis, daughter of Rev. Stephen Ellis. Susan was the half-sister of Sarah Ellis, who married James Barton. Many descendants of Joshua Lane Barton are buried at Pine Log. James Monroe Barton was the son of Vinson Anderson Barton and Susan Ellis, was married to Collista Ann Collins.
Many Pine Log Bartons descend from James
Monroe. Stephen Ellis, father of both Susan Ellis Barton and Sarah Ellis
Barton, was born March 25, 1787 in NC. Stephen was a Methodist minister and
established the Pine Log Methodist Church in 1834. This is where the 2003
reunion will be held. The church is on the National Register of Historic
Places and has an interesting history.
This gives you some history and insight into the Pine Log and other Northwest Georgia Bartons and how they fit in with other Bartons. Pine Log Bartons are making plans and looking forward to seeing many other Bartons in June.
Shirley Keith
Also at the Reunion
Lester Barton family will make a presentation about their Solomon Barton family who hails from Kent, England and Rich will make a presentation about his Josiah Barton family which hails from Lancashire.
Twenty rooms have been
blocked off at Holiday Inn for June 20-23, in
case some want to arrive on the night of the 20th and leave on the

and a restaurant/bar in their facility that opens at
5 PM. It is within
3 miles of Ryan's, Cracker Barrel, Shoney's. Waffle House is across the

Also, there is a Comfort Inn at the Adairsville Exit on I-75 (Exit 306)
which is 13 miles from the church. Rooms have NOT been blocked off
here. Their number is 770-773-2886.

From Our Readers:
( This letter was sent to us before the hostilities with Iraq began )
2nd Lt. Jonathan Barton
My name is 2nd Lt. Jonathan Barton. I was born in Lincoln, Dec. 31, 1979. My parents are Pamela Ridgway and Bill Barton. I spent my entire life in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1998. From LCHS, I attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated June 1, 2002.I am engaged to Carolyn Larson of Rockford. She is a speech pathology graduate student at Illinois State University. Our wedding is planned for this December. She is light of my life and having her makes everything over here easier because I know I have her to look forward to the rest of my life. I am here with the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment. We are stationed out of Fort Stewart, Ga. I am a fire direction officer, which basically means I help turn the information observers close to the battlefield send about targets into data our artillery pieces can use to shoot at those targets. This is my first assignment in the Army. My living accommodations here in Kuwait are better than I expected. I live in a climate-controlled tent and have access to a semi-warm shower every three days. Our days are filled with different training events to make sure we are ready to accomplish whatever orders the President issues. Our evenings are filled with many different activities. Some of the soldiers brought computers or portable DVD players to pass the time. Others sit around and play every imaginable type of card game. Spades is the game of choice for me. I'm not very good but I am getting better. The food here is not too bad, but we have the same meal for breakfast everyday and a rotation of about three meals for dinner. On Valentine's Day we did get a special steak. It wasn't exactly a Guzzardo's prime rib, but it was a nice change of pace. The camp where I live has very limited phone and e-mail access. Other camps in the area have better facilities, which our leadership tries to get us to every week or so. The largest facility here in Kuwait is Camp Doha, just outside Kuwait City and it is basically a little city for military personnel. Unfortunately, that is a several-hour drive from where I am and people can only get there on official
business. I have very little access to the regular Kuwaiti culture. There is no interaction with Kuwaitis but there are Pakistanis who work in our mess tent. The only thing I know about Kuwait is that there is sand as far as the eye can see. There is very little wild life or vegetation. I can count on one hand the different types of wild life I have seen in my five weeks here in Kuwait. As far as I know there are mice, beetles and a strange type of bird that looks like a sparrow with feather horns on top of its head. I have seen one tree since I have been here. Things here are getting pretty busy as the newest UN deadline approaches. I just want to thank everyone back home for all their thoughts and prayers. I am the person I am today thanks to many of the people who are probably reading this article right now. Most of all, I have my parents to thank for all their love and support. See you all soon.

ANCIENT BARTON LINES
After I finished the update to "Seven Early Bartons" I got to thinking "what about the really early i.e., ancient Bartons"?
I mined the following from my database:
We have three "Ancient Barton Lines" (pre-1588).
1. Randolphus (Ralph) de Barton ["... was living in County York, England, during the time of King Henry II (1154-1189)"]. This is the progenitor (12 generations back) of Alexander Barton who married Susan Stedman abt. 1509 and who changed his name to Stedman. "On the death of Susan (Stedman) Barton, in 1565, Alexander applied to Queen Mary (1542-1567) of Scotland and was granted 'arms of adoption' by which he was empowered to obtain the estate bequeathed to his wife by her father, on the condition that he assume the name and arms of the deceased father. - (Burke - The General Armory, p. XL.). Alexander Barton thus became 'Charles Stedman." Alexander's father was the great Scottish Admiral Sir Andrew Barton who died 2 Aug 1511 in a battle at sea.
2. William Barton who died in 1588 in Cheshire, England, (daughter-in-law = Jane Sclater) whose 7th Great-Grandson Edmund Barton (b. 1804, London, England; died 1864, South Australia) is the oldest progenitor of one of our Australian lines.
3. Ralph Barton who married Johanna Radcliffe and had a son John Barton who died bef. 1516
4. All three of these lines are shown in my database. The Randolphus (Ralph) line has five pages of descendants (many, many Bartons not just Stedmans). We have other Australian lines but William's is the only ancient one. The information about Ralph m. Johanna came from The Barton Banner, Vol. 1, No. 5, which quotes from Lancashire Life, Nov. 1980, p.55 "Is Your Name Barton". Altogether there are over 280 descendants of these three lines shown. We have no links, yet, to these ancient Bartons through the Barton DNA Project
5. Current researchers of these three ancient Barton lines are:
6. Randolphus - Leo Barton lbarton@wizzards.net
7. William - Robyn L. Burrows robynlb@dingoblue.net.au
8. Ralph - none noted

It has been almost two
years since I updated all of my personal family tree
web pages. I tried to enter all of the thousands of changes that y'all sent
since the last update. There are still a few that I haven't resolved and I'm
not sure how to resolve them yet. I added several new family trees to the
collection. I added over 5,000 links to Georgia Genealogy documents. They
are alphabetical by the last part of the URL. I added about 500 links to
some of my favorite pages. There are about 8,000 links on the home page now.
I have not tested every link so some possibly won't work. I will be dropping
Earthlink within the week and using the new Bellsouth email address and URL
for my home page. The link to the new home page is below. It looks kind of
weird but it does work. If you have any constructive criticism or otherwise,
please let me know. I hope someone will find something they can use or
something interesting as a result of all the work I put into creating this
mess.

David Barton
My name is Bonnie Toole and my husband is a descendant of Nancy Caroline Barton Stewart Barton and Anderson Freeman Flinn. I sent Gary Barton the inscription on David Barton's tombstone and asked him to include it under the notes on the data base for Bartons.
Would you consider adding this to the Barton Newsletter for those who
do not have access to the Internet?
I really like the quote on David Barton's tombstone. Could or would you add
it to your notes? Good idea!
Done! It is beginning
to be hard to read and may be lost in years to come. I also am not sure if
any of his
other current-day descendants know it is on the tombstone.

Did You Know...?
The Barton Database (www.bartondatabase.info) contains Bartons from seven different countries of Birth besides the USA? Bartons from: England, Wales, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Norway, Germany. These Barton ancestors from outside of the US are especially important when considered in the context of the ongoing BARTON DNA Project. It behooves us all to encourage as many Barton males to participate in the DNA Project as possible (especially those foreign-born cousins) so that we can "track down" our immigrant ancestors!
The Barton Cemetery in Oates, Reynolds Co., MO, has (by far - 70+) the largest number of residents.
I'll bet that there are some interesting stories about these cemeteries if someone would like to take on the project of doing the research! Perhaps by soliciting input from the readers of the Newsletter? Maybe this could be a project of one or more of the members of the Board of Bartons? Are there other Barton Cemeteries elsewhere in the USA or overseas?

Gary

Check out the seven-page tellinwww.electricscotland.com/history/leith/17.htmg of the exploits of "The Fighting Bartons" of Leith, Scotland, during the period 1476-1513. Fascinating! t brings to mind the question of what happened to this Barton line? I don't recall seeing much about the Scottish Bartons .It mentions that the middle son, Sir Robert Barton, "... assumed the name and arms of Moubray" following his marriage to Barbara Moubray "... the only daughter and heiress of the long and noble line of the Moubrays, whose ancestor, Sir Philip, had held Stirling Castle for Edward I." But, what of the children of Sir Robert Barton's two brothers Admiral Sir Andrew Barton and his brother John Barton? One of Andrew Barton's sons, Alexander Barton, went on to assume the name of Stedman. This is now of great interest to the Barton DNA Project and is a sidebar story that Terry and Leo are working on. Based upon the above it now appears that the current surname Moubray (if there are any) could also in fact be ancient Barton's!Where oh where are the Scottish Bartons? Stedmans? Moubrays?
