      7.  John2 Barton (Joseph1)24,25,26 was born July 12, 180227, and died July 06, 1850 in Fairview Township, York Co. Pa.27.  He met Catharine Umberger28 1828 in PA, daughter of David Umberger and Dorothea Maisch.  She was born September 04, 1806 in Warrington Twp. , York Co., PA, and died March 29, 1895 in At 3:00 p.m in her home, 150 West North Street, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.

Notes for John Barton:

I also looked for and found John as a teacher in Fairview Twp York Co in the 1827-28 Tax assessment. At the same time was Joseph a farmer who died 1830-34 and James a laborer, Isaac a tanner and Joseph, Jr. a laborer. Joseph, Sr. first shows up in the 1820-21 tax assessment for Fairview. I wonder where he was in 1820 and 1810 censuses. 1810 Lancaster, Salisbury Twp page 435 is 1 Joseph in PA.  In the 1850 Cumberland Co. PA census is Isaac 49 with James 54 and Mary 51. Mary may be their sister. For in 1830 the census for Joseph (Sr.) is 3M20-30, 1 M70-80, 1F 20-30 and 1F60-70.

Joseph, Jr. 1st shows up in 1820-21 assessment also as single (one had to be 21 to show up as single in the taxes), James and Isaac show up in 1822-23. I could not hook John to Joseph directly but it almost has to be so.

Yes John Barton's parents were Joseph and Pheobe (also spelled a variety of ways such as Feby). I found some information in the York Co. Historical Society and Cumberland county courts that seemed to piece it together:

Here are my notes:

R. Coraor visited the Lisburn Cemetery on 8/13/1996. It is located in Lisburn, Pa. next to the Lisburn Fire Co. along the creek that forms the Cumberland and York Co. boundary. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS:

Valentine's will lists his mother and father as Jospeh and Feby, his wife Letty and siblings Isaac, James, Joseph, John and Polly.

On the letter of attorney for James Barton, the first Mary Barton is James' sister (and daughter of Joseph and Phebe), then the remaining names would be the children of John Barton (who died in 1850), i.e. Joseph, David, Caroline, William, John and Mary Ellen. This means that the JAMES who was subject of the letters was brother to Isaac, Mary and John. The other child of Joseph and Phebe was Valentine but he died much earlier in 1821.

John Umberger was Catherine Umberger BARTON's brother and thus it is understandable that he might be the administrator to Isaac Barton if Isaac was indeed related to John Barton as would be indicated by his burial plot being close to the rest of the family.

Cheers,

Bob

Notes for Catharine Umberger:

Hi Doug,

Thank you very much for finding and contacting me.  I gather you found my information on WorldConnect.  I’m descended from John Stickel (1791-1870) and his first wife Mary (Bentzley) Stickel (1791-1862).  They were settlers in Macon County, Illinois in the late 1830s.  A couple of years after Mary’s death, John married the widow Catherine (Umberger) Barton (1806-1895).  I’m only beginning to learn about her family and look forward to finding out what you know.  They were married a little over 5 years when he died.

My sources for the Barton/Umberger family are:

Macon County, Illinois Estate Papers, Macon County Clerk, Catherine Stickel, Box 151, Case 2112.

_Decatur Daily Republican_, 30 Mar 1895, pg. 3, col. 5, Catharine Stickel obituary.

Greenwood Cemetery Gravestone Inscriptions, Block 5, John Stickle and Catherine Barton Stickel.

1870 U.S. Federal census of Macon County, Illinois, sheet 3, pg. 321 (Decatur township, Decatur Post Office), dwelling 15, family 15, John Stickle household.

I should also mention a letter written by Isaiah Stickel (John’s son) to his nephew (John’s grandson)

29 Jan 1865 in which he says:

"Father stated that he thought of changing his mode of life and of setting up housekeeping on his own account.  I think it a good plan providing he gets the right kind of a companion and if he gets one to suit himself nobody need complain.  The lady is a Mrs Barton living in Penn.  She is a dutch lady - has considerable property and and Father says she is religious and a good House Keeper."

The obituary is as follows:

GONE HOME

Death of a Venerable Lady, Mrs. Stickel, at 150 North Street

The death of Mrs. Catharine Stickel, occurred at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon at 150 West North Street, the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. A. Leforgee.  She had been ill a week, and was nearly 89 years of age.  She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Caroline Floyd, of Mt. Zion, and Mrs. F. A. Leforgee, of Decatur, also three sisters in Pennsylvania and a brother, Captain Umberger, in Kansas.

Catherine Umberger was born in York County, Pa., Sept. 4, 1806.  Her father was a captain in the war of 1812.  She was the fourth of twelve children, nine girls and three boys, all of who lived to be honored and respected.  Both of her parents lived to be over 80 years of age.  At the age of 22 years she was married to John Barton, a pioneer schoolteacher.  Eight children were born to them, six of whom grew to manhood and womanhood.  Two died in infancy and four died after having attained their majorities, Mrs. Floyd and Mrs. Leforgee being the only two children left.  On March 7, 1865, she was married to John Stickel, who died five years later.  She was a member of the Church of God for sixty-five years, and for thirty years she had lived in Decatur.  For a number of years she has made her home with her daughter in Decatur.

I can send you copies of her estate papers that detail her heirs.

That’s pretty much all I know.  I’d very much like to know more.

Best wishes,

Kimball G. 'Kim' Everingham

"Joseph Barton and his wife, settled in the State of Kansas, at or near Clinton, Douglas County, as shown by his Commission as Lieutenant issued by Thomas Carney, the then Governor of Kansas.  After their removal to the State of Kansas, Lincoln C. Barton, the oldest child of said Joseph and Adeline E. Barton, - was born December 30, 1861; also a sister, Exmenia Barton, known as Minnie Barton, was afterward intermarried with one John Ward,-was born in the State of Kansas.  About the year 1863, Joseph Barton and family, removed to Montgomery County, Missouri, as the Records in the Recorder's Office of said county, show, that on September 13, 1863, in SUPPLIED RECORD "A" at Page 473, he purchased from one Abraham Baldwin, 260 acres of real estate situate in Section 2, Township 46, Range 6, West, of said County.  Lincoln C. Doug    Just found your query concerning Adaline Rife. Perhaps the following will help. Much of these data came to me over 10 years ago from Rev. O.R.Reiff (dec.) and from Robert Coraor.   According to these researchers Adaline was born Oct. 10 1836 and died July 28,1918. She was married twice, first to Joseph Barton   b.Oct. 20, 1832, d. Aug. 9, 1871; and then to Benjamin S. Baker, b. Aug. , 1851, d. Dec. 6, 1928.  Her children with Barton were Lincoln, Minnie B., and Everett; with Baker were Frank and Alvin B.  Adaline/Adeline's father was indeed Christian Rife, who married Mariah Eby. I can take the Rife/Reiff line back quite a bit further, if you're interested.

     Regards Harry Reiff

Adaline Rife was b. in York Co. PA Oct. 10, 1836. Her first husband Joseph Barton, also b. in York Co. was b. Oct. 20 1832. He died Aug. 9, 1871, and Adaline next married Benjamin S. Baker. By her first marriage, she had children Lincoln b. 1861, m. Fannie Ellis; Exmenia (!) (Used the name Minnie) m. John Ward, and Everett b. 1868 d. 1955 m. Georgia E. Huddleston.  Her second marriage, to Baker, produced Frank O. and Alvin b., d. 1956.  She was an aunt of the celebrated jockeys, Lester and Johnny Reiff.  Lester won the English derby for W. C. Whitney, and Johnny won two English derbies.

     Adaline was one of 8 children of Christian Rife, b. 1807 d. 1886, and his wife Mariah Eby, b. 1808, d. 1883.

Christian was one of 9 children of Abraham Reiff, b. 1769, d. 1818, and his wife Ann (Nancy) Hershey, b. ?, d. 1855.

Abraham was one of 6 children of Abraham Reiff (Sr.) b. 1735, d. 1774 and his wife Barbara Lehman b. 1746, d. 1818.

Finally, Abraham (Sr.) was one of 5 children of the immigrant Hans Reiff,b. ca. 1690, d. 1755. Hans Reiff came to America with his brothers Abraham Reiff and (John) Jacob Reiff, all Mennonites. An excellent article on the European origins of the three brothers can be found in the quarterly journal "Mennonite Family History", vol. XI No. 1, Jan. 1992. The title of the article is 'Swiss Reiff and Hiestand Families' the journal is published byMennonite Family History, 220 Mill Road Morgantown PA 19543-9701. I understand copies can be had for 4 or 5 dollars.  Again, I would appreciate hearing your line of descent from Adaline-just the vital statistics-spouse and children names and dates-for my records.

Repeating my last e-mail, Barton is not necessarily a German (i.e., Pennsylvania Dutch) name. Perhaps Barton's female ancestors were German. York Co. PA had English and Scotch settlers as well as German ones.

     Regards Harry Reiff

A genealogy has been published for the first three or four generations of the three immigrant Mennonite Reiff brothers who arrived in PA around 1717-Abraham, Hans, and (John) Jacob. It is in the quarterly "Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage" vol 22, No2, April, 1999 p 11, published by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, 2215 Millstream Rd., Lancaster, PA 17602. Title: "Descendants of the Three Mennonite Reiff Brothers: immigrants from Europe to Pennsylvania" by Daniel Lehman.

1903-1947 Elected to Ciruit Clerk for Montgomery Co.

Since 1892 Everett Barton has served as circuit clerk for Montgomery, this being his fifth consecutive four-year term.  During this time he has proved himself to be a man of thorough reliability--always a man of his word--and his friends, who are many, speak of him in terms of the highest regard.  He is a native son of Montgomery County, having been born in Americus on his father's farm.  His father was Joseph Barton, a native of Pennsylvania, whose death occurred in 1871.  In 1851, during the gold rush, he went to California, and ten years later, during the Civil War period, bought a farm in Montgomery on which he resided until his death.  For many years he conducted a country store and he also served as a justice of the peace for some time.  He was licensed United States Internal Revenue Gauger, and while residing in Kansas in 1858, immediately following his marriage, he was lieutenant of cavalry in the state troops.

"In the acquirement of an education, Everett Barton attended the public schools of Montgomery County until he reached the age of sixteen years at which time he put his textbooks aside and secured employment in the store of W. A. Crockett at Americus, where he remained for a period of twelve years.  His position was that of general clerk.  This store had been established by his father, Joseph Barton, some years before.  During the years, 1889-1893, he, in connection with James J. Merritt, operated a country store at Mineola, Montgomery County, and in this venture achieved a substantial success.  In 1894 Mr. Barton was elected county treasurer in which office he served for one term, and in 1897, he left for the Klondike in the spirit of adventure.  The published account of his trip reads like a romance, for in this land he passed through the hardships and adventures of which one reads, and he met many of the world's celebrated men, among them Jack London with whom he corresponded until the former's death.  Mr. Barton spent fifty-four days packing his equipment through the Chilkoot Pass, and he spent two years in that wonderful country, prospecting and mining.  In August of the year, 1899, he returned from the Klondike and resumed his position in the general store at Americus for two years.  In 1892 he was nominated and elected circuit clerk for Montgomery County and has since held that position, now serving his fifth consecutive four-year term, which has broken the record for this office.  In every election but one he has led his ticket, and he has never had opposition in his own party.

"On May 21, 1893, Mr. Barton was united in marriage to Miss Georgia E. Huddleston, a daughter of Dr. David B. Huddleston, of Mineola, Montgomery county, who for many years practiced his profession throughout the county and was recognized as one of the most able and progressive physicians of his day.  His wife before her marriage was Miss Florence Taylor, a native of Virginia.  Two children have been born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Barton.  Joseph C. Barton is a mining engineer in charge of the Griesemer Graphite Company of Ashland, Alabama.  His position is that of general manager and he has full charge of the work.  He married Miss Jewel Evans, a native of Montgomery and they have one daughter, Mildred Jackquelin. Catherine Barton is at present finishing her course at Stevens College, Columbia, Missouri.

"Since age conferred on Mr. Barton the right of franchise, he has been a staunch support of the republican party.  Mr. Barton was reared in the faith of the Methodist church and his wife is a Baptist.  Fraternally his is a Knight of Pythias and belongs to Willsville Lodge No. 102. Mr. Barton has always been more or less interested in farming, and he is owner of a fine farm in Manitoba, Canada, located about one hundred and fifty miles northwest of Winnipeg, on a beautiful lake, which he bought as a speculative proposition.  The popularity of Mr. Barton is manifest in his continuous service as a circuit clerk of Montgomery County, and one of the judges of the St. Louis court of appeals has pronounced him to be the most efficient clerk in his district.  Mr. Barton is deeply interested in all that has to do with the material, intellectual and moral progress of his community and his cooperation can be counted upon to further any project or enterprise for the public good."8
